| I met
Angela in Orkney one day last summer as she sought to come to terms with the
strong and ineffable pull that the islands, and especially the area round
Marwick Head and the Kitchener
memorial, exerted on her. Something to do with a previous
incarnation, she said. Towards evening she asked me if I would take some
photographs of her as she attempted to reach back into her history.
Although she had made a particular request for black and white shots, I couldn't resist the back lighting in her hair, so I alternated films in an attempt to meet both our preferences. At some point, I forgot to wind on the black & white film and knew within minutes that I had double-exposed it. As I apologised to Angela, she explained that this was no accident, but the past imprinting itself on our picture-poem. |
