Angela's Orkney
July 2003

On 5 june 1916 HMS Hampshire sank off Marwick Head, after reportedly hitting a German mine. Over 600 lives were lost, including that of Lord Kitchener. Rumours abound as to what were the actual circumstances of this tragedy. Orkadian oral history claims that locals were prevented from launching lifeboats in good time to save the shipwrecked, and that they were even prevented at gunpoint from coming to the rescue of survivors washed up on shore.
